6 Tips for Staying Productive When Working From Home

For some, working from home has been the gift that keeps on giving; for others it’s been difficult. There are more distractions, but once you get into a good routine and form good habits, you’re going to thrive. Set Up a Dedicated Workspace

One big difference between your home and a traditional office is the workspace itself. A desk and chair are your best friends. You may not be able to invest in office furniture, but you can shuffle things around to set up an ergonomic workspace. If you work in your bed or on your couch, you are more likely to struggle to concentrate; and experience back, neck, and shoulder injuries.

Limit Your Distractions

When you’re working at home, identify your newfound distractions in order to avoid them. Common distractions are other occupants in the house, social media, pets, and chores.

How to deal with distractions:

  • Set boundaries with housemates, discuss when you are open to conversation and when you need to concentrate
  • Wear noise-cancelling headphones and listen to music which helps you concentrate
  • Keep your phone out of arm’s reach and avoid social media
  • Dedicate set times to do chores and give your pets attention

Take Regular Breaks

When you’re struggling to concentrate, take a break, get a healthy snack, and take your mind off your work for a moment. We can only focus for a certain amount of time before we need a break; there’s no point in staring at your computer and getting nothing done – take a break and refresh your brain.

Stick to a Schedule

When you work from home, it’s far too easy to roll out of bed, into your chair, and start tapping away at the keyboard. If you don’t get into the same habits as when you work in an office, you may struggle to get into work mode. Make sure you get up at the same time, eat your regular breakfast, get dressed, and take a lunch break when it’s lunchtime.

Plan Your Day

In an office, you may be regularly reminded of your tasks at home; however, without the chatter amongst your peers, you could forget what’s your next task is. The best way to maintain this focus and ensure you don’t forget anything is by writing a to-do list every day and sticking to it.

Switch Off at the End of the Day

It’s tempting to answer just one more email, do one more task, get ahead for tomorrow, or take one more call – but don’t. Before you know it, one more email turns into another hour of work, but you can’t work effectively if you’re tired. Take time for yourself to unwind at the end of the day; that way, you can be productive tomorrow.
